Reflective Writing Task

My Ballet Fitness class on Monday had 6 people in attendance. On reflection my advertising scheme has been to offer a trial class for free and over the past few months I have probably lost over £100 due to people who just come for one class. I think although I enjoy people being able to trial the class I do need to try and make a profit. This does come into my ethical considerations as I believe people should be able to try classes for free to encourage them to exercise. But I have to be professional and remember if I don't make any money I won't be able to provide any classes at all. And my classes are always to a professional standard and I believe they are worth the money every time.

This week I did a track list based loosely on Halloween. I always try and change the class music and exercises each week to keep things interesting. Before the class a girl did mention she didn't buy into Halloween and I was slightly worried she wouldn't enjoy the class but she did later appear to be. All the exercises were to the same standard I usually teach. Setting aside the Halloween theme I felt the class was hard but fun, we always focus on getting a good level of cardio within the hour to make sure the class level is always changing.

We focused a lot on using the core in the centre this week. I alternate between core/lower body weeks but this week I really wanted to push the regulars to move away from the barre as it does force them to engage their core more, I also emphasized the fact the exercises would now be harder because I felt they could do it and had complete faith they were ready for them. I like to keep classes completely positive as these are not classes for professional dancers; they are classes for people who want to make sure they exercise and are trying to fit it into their busy schedules. I actually really admire all the people that attend my classes as I think it can be so difficult nowadays to take time for yourself and your well being.

I would like to go on an intense personal training course to learn more about the body in depth. Obviously during my 5 years of training we learnt about the anatomy of the body - and in particular how to train the muscles in different and effective ways. However I believe we never really stop learning new things and it would be great to get a perspective purely from a fitness point of view too, as I'm sure it could add to my knowledge I already have from a dancers point of view. It is such a broad area with people feeling different exercises are more effective than others, so hopefully I can get as much information as possible and add them into class in different ways. This could hopefully lead onto me afterwards training in rehabilitation for dancers to as I would have an extensive knowledge to allow me to provide people with exercises to help them recover with different injuries. Interesting thought.

  1. Hi,
I had similar feelings of isolation. And I too then looked on Facebook and linkd in and saw I was connected with so many people in different areas of the industry, but without Web 2.0 these connections would simply not be there. I now understand the true importance of online networking and how much my career has been affected by this.
